Complete Guide to Dog-Friendly Beaches in Carolina Beach & Kure Beach
A beach vacation is even better when your four-legged family member gets to come along.
Carolina Beach and Kure Beach are both great destinations for travelers with dogs, with miles of shoreline to explore, pet-friendly outdoor spaces and plenty of local spots where your pup can tag along. But before you grab the leash and head for the sand, there are a few important rules to know especially during the busy summer season.
Dog regulations change throughout the year and vary slightly depending on where you are on Pleasure Island.
Here's what you need to know before hitting the beach with your pup.
Carolina Beach Dog Rules
Dogs are welcome on the beach in Carolina Beach, but when they can join you depends on the season.
April 1 – September 30 | Peak Season
During the warmer months:
Dogs are allowed on the beach before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM
Dogs are not permitted on the beach between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM
Early mornings are honestly one of the best times to go anyway. The sand is cooler, the beach is quieter and you can start your day with a sunrise walk along the Atlantic.
October 1 – March 31 | Off-Season
During the off-season:
Dogs are permitted on the beach at any time of day
Fewer crowds and cooler temperatures make fall and winter an especially good time to visit Carolina Beach with a dog.
General Carolina Beach Rules
Whenever your dog is permitted on the beach:
Dogs must remain on a leash
Owners must carry waste bags
Pet waste must be picked up and properly disposed of
Pay attention to posted signage and protected wildlife areas
Vesta Tip: Keep several waste bags attached to your dog's leash rather than tossing one into your beach bag. It's one less thing to remember every time you head outside.
Freeman Park
A Favorite for Beach-Loving Dogs
At the north end of Carolina Beach, Freeman Park offers a completely different beach experience and is especially popular with visitors traveling with dogs.
Rules here also change seasonally.
April 1 – September 30
Dogs are permitted but must remain on a leash
October 1 – March 31
Dogs may be off-leash when permitted under current park regulations and kept under voice control
Freeman Park is one of the area's most popular places for dogs to enjoy a little extra room during the off-season.
Vesta Tip: Freeman Park is also a vehicle-access beach, so even when off-leash rules permit more freedom, stay aware of traffic and keep your dog close enough to respond immediately.
Kure Beach Dog Rules
Kure Beach offers a quieter stretch of shoreline that's perfect for long walks with your pup.
Like Carolina Beach, its dog-friendly beach hours change depending on the season.
April 1 – September 30 | Peak Season
Dogs are allowed on the beach before 9:00 AM and after 5:00 PM
Dogs are not permitted between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM
October 1 – March 31 | Off-Season

General Kure Beach Rules

Vesta Tip: An evening walk in Kure Beach is one of our favorite summer options. Head out after 5:00 PM when the sand starts cooling down, then wander toward the pier as the beach gets quieter.
What About the Carolina Beach Boardwalk?
Don't assume that every outdoor area allowing people also allows pets.
The Carolina Beach Boardwalk and surrounding business district have their own pet restrictions, so check current town signage and regulations before bringing your dog into the area.
When in doubt, leave your pup comfortably at your vacation rental while you explore the Boardwalk, then plan a beach walk together during permitted hours.
Keeping Your Dog Safe at the Beach
The beach is basically the world's largest sandbox to a dog, but coastal conditions bring a few extra things to consider.
Watch the Heat
Sand can become extremely hot during summer afternoons and can burn paw pads surprisingly quickly.
If the sand is uncomfortable against your bare feet, it's probably uncomfortable for your dog too.
Early morning and evening outings are usually much more comfortable.
Bring Plenty of Fresh Water
Don't let your dog drink ocean water.
Pack fresh drinking water and a collapsible bowl, especially if you're planning a longer walk or spending time at Freeman Park.
Create Some Shade
Dogs can overheat quickly on an exposed beach. If you're spending more than a short period outside, bring an umbrella, canopy or another source of shade where permitted.
Pay Attention to Wildlife
Pleasure Island is home to shorebirds, sea turtles and other protected wildlife.
Keep your dog away from nests, marked-off areas and wildlife, and never allow them to chase birds or other animals.
Don't Forget Those Waste Bags
Bring more than you think you'll need. Seriously. Running out when you're half a mile from your rental is not the beach memory anybody wants.

Early evening in Kure Beach: Head out after permitted summer hours and enjoy a quieter walk as the daytime crowds disappear.
Fall at Freeman Park: Cooler weather and fewer visitors make the off-season especially enjoyable for dogs.
Winter beach days: Pleasure Island winters can have beautifully mild days, and off-season regulations give you much more flexibility about when you can bring your dog onto the beach.

Before heading to the coast, throw a few pup-specific items into your beach bag:

Plenty of waste bags
Fresh water
Collapsible water bowl
Towel
Paw protection if needed

A second towel near the door of your rental is also a very good idea.
Because somehow one dog can bring approximately half of Carolina Beach's sand back inside with them.
