Freeman Park: Carolina Beach’s Drive-On Beach Adventure
Looking for a beach day with a little more freedom? Freeman Park offers one of Carolina Beach’s most unique coastal experience a drive-on beach where you can skip hauling chairs and coolers from the parking lot and bring your setup right onto the sand.
Located at the north end of Carolina Beach, Freeman Park has a laid-back, adventurous feel that’s completely different from the busier public beach accesses. With the right vehicle and a little preparation, you can find your spot, unpack for the day, and settle in with the ocean just steps away.
Once you're on the beach, you can:
Park your vehicle right on the sand
Set up chairs, umbrellas, canopies, and grills
Spend the day swimming, fishing, relaxing, or exploring the shoreline
Bring your pup along for the adventure
It’s an especially fun option for families, groups, anglers, and anyone who prefers a more relaxed beach day without constantly trekking back and forth to the car.
Dogs at Freeman Park
Freeman Park is also a favorite for visitors traveling with dogs. Dogs are welcome year-round, with seasonal leash rules:
April 1 – September 30: Dogs must remain on a leash.
October 1 – March 31: Dogs may be off-leash when under voice command and control.
Always clean up after your pup and check current Town of Carolina Beach regulations before visiting, as rules can change seasonally.
Fishing & Outdoor Fun
Surf fishing is a big part of the Freeman Park experience. Anglers can cast directly from the beach, while crabbing and casting for minnows are also popular along the shoreline.
Freeman Park has also historically offered primitive overnight camping. Camping is currently suspended due to beach erosion and nourishment projects, so be sure to check current Town updates before planning an overnight stay.
What to Know Before You Go
Freeman Park isn't your typical beach access—and that's exactly what makes it fun. A little planning will make your visit much easier.
Before heading out:
Bring a four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle. Beach conditions can be soft and challenging.
Purchase the required Freeman Park access permit before entering.
Air down your tires to improve traction and reduce the chance of getting stuck.
Check the tides before you arrive and keep an eye on changing water levels throughout the day.
Pack everything you'll need, including water, food, sunscreen, chairs, towels, and beach gear.
Leave the beach better than you found it and pack out everything you bring in.

If it’s your first time driving on the beach, don’t underestimate the sand. Airing down your tires before entering can make a huge difference, and staying in established tire tracks is usually your best bet. Check the weather, tides, and current Freeman Park conditions before heading out so you can spend less time worrying about getting stuck and more time enjoying one of Carolina Beach’s most memorable beach experiences.
