Best Places to Watch the Sunrise in Carolina Beach & Kure Beach
There are beach mornings, and then there are Carolina Beach and Kure Beach sunrise mornings.
Because Pleasure Island's beaches face the Atlantic, you have a front-row seat as the sun comes up over the ocean. And yes, it's worth setting the alarm early at least once during your vacation.
Grab a coffee, throw on something comfortable, and head toward the water. From the Carolina Beach Boardwalk to the quieter shoreline of Kure Beach and Fort Fisher, here are some of our favorite places to watch the island wake up.
Carolina Beach Boardwalk
For a classic Carolina Beach sunrise, start at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk.
Before the shops open, music starts, and summer crowds arrive, this part of town has an entirely different feel.
Head down to the sand, walk along the shoreline, or find a spot overlooking the Atlantic and watch the sky slowly change color.
It's also one of the best options if you're staying near central Carolina Beach and don't want to get in the car before you've even had coffee.
Best for: First-time visitors, easy access + classic Carolina Beach scenery
Vesta Tip: Get there about 20–30 minutes before the official sunrise time. Some of the prettiest colors happen before the sun ever appears above the horizon.
Freeman Park
For something a little more adventurous, head north to Freeman Park.
Located at the northern end of Carolina Beach, Freeman Park offers a more natural stretch of shoreline with dunes, sea grasses, wildlife, and wide-open Atlantic views.
Early morning is especially beautiful before the beach gets busier.
If you're driving onto Freeman Park, remember that beach driving is restricted to appropriate 4WD vehicles and requires an access pass. Conditions and access can also change due to tides, weather, and erosion, so always check current Town information before heading out.
Best for: Adventure, photography + quieter beach mornings
Vesta Tip: Pack coffee and breakfast and turn sunrise into an entire morning on the north end.
A Quiet Carolina Beach Access
You don't need a famous landmark to find a great sunrise.
Carolina Beach has public beach accesses throughout town, and some of our favorite mornings are spent at the smaller neighborhood accesses away from the Boardwalk.
If your vacation rental is within walking distance of the ocean, there's a good chance your best sunrise spot is simply at the end of your street.
Roll out of bed, grab your coffee, walk to the sand, and call it a morning well spent.
Best for: Peace + quiet, couples and easy mornings
Kure Beach Pier
Head a little farther south and you'll find one of our favorite sunrise backdrops on Pleasure Island: Kure Beach Pier.
The historic pier stretches out over the Atlantic and creates a beautiful silhouette as the morning light starts to fill the sky.
Walk along the beach beside the pier, settle into the sand, or enjoy an early stroll through the heart of Kure Beach.
The area is especially peaceful before the rest of town wakes up.
Best for: Photos, couples + classic coastal scenery
Vesta Tip: Position yourself on the beach near the pier rather than worrying about being directly on it. You'll get the sunrise over the water and the pier in your photos.
Kure Beach Ocean Front Park
Just steps from the pier, Kure Beach Ocean Front Park & Pavilion is another easy place to start your morning.
The park overlooks the ocean and features seating, green space, and easy access to the surrounding Kure Beach waterfront area.
It's a great choice for anyone who wants to enjoy the sunrise without necessarily setting up on the sand.
Grab coffee, find a spot overlooking the water, and enjoy one of the quietest times of day in Kure Beach.
Best for: Easy access, families + anyone who prefers staying off the sand
A Quiet Kure Beach Access
Kure Beach generally has a quieter, more residential feel than central Carolina Beach, which makes its neighborhood beach accesses especially good for sunrise.
Pick an access near your rental and head toward the ocean.
No itinerary. No parking battle. No elaborate plan required.
Just you, the Atlantic, and hopefully coffee.
Best for: Quiet mornings + feeling like you have the beach to yourself
Fort Fisher
Keep driving south through Kure Beach and you'll eventually reach Fort Fisher — one of our absolute favorite parts of Pleasure Island.
The shoreline becomes increasingly natural and undeveloped as you head toward the southern end of the island, giving sunrise here a completely different feel from the center of Carolina Beach.
You'll find stretches of beach, dunes, coastal vegetation, and plenty of room for an early morning walk.
If you're willing to get up a little earlier and make the drive, it's worth it.
Best for: Nature lovers, photographers + peaceful mornings
Vesta Tip: Don't immediately turn around after sunrise. Stick around and explore Fort Fisher while the morning is still cool and quiet.
Carolina Beach or Kure Beach, Which Is Better?
Honestly?
You can't really screw this one up.
For a little more activity and classic beach-town scenery, we love Carolina Beach.
For something quieter and slower-paced, Kure Beach is hard to beat.
And for a more natural coastal setting, keep heading south toward Fort Fisher.
The Atlantic is doing most of the work here. Your job is basically just to show up.
The Vesta Sunrise Formula
We keep this highly scientific:
Step 1: Check the next morning's sunrise time.
Step 2: Get up earlier than you'd normally consider acceptable on vacation.
Step 3: Acquire coffee.
Step 4: Be on the beach 20–30 minutes before sunrise.
Step 5: Take approximately 47 pictures.
Step 6: Put your phone down and actually watch the damn sunrise.
Easy.
A Few Sunrise Tips
A little planning makes an early alarm much more worthwhile.
Arrive before sunrise. The sky often starts showing color well before the sun reaches the horizon.
Don't automatically skip cloudy mornings. A few clouds can create some of the most dramatic sunrise colors.
Bring a light layer. Spring and fall mornings beside the ocean can feel surprisingly cool.
Look behind you, too. Everyone focuses on the horizon, but early morning light hitting the dunes, homes, and pier can be just as beautiful.
And most importantly, don't feel like you need to turn it into a photoshoot.
Some mornings are better experienced than documented.
Our Favorite Sunrise Spots
If we had to narrow it down:
Classic Carolina Beach: Carolina Beach Boardwalk
Quiet Carolina Beach: A neighborhood beach access
Adventure: Freeman Park
Classic Kure Beach: Kure Beach Pier
Easy Kure Beach: Ocean Front Park
Quiet + Romantic: A neighborhood Kure Beach access
Natural + Peaceful: Fort Fisher
But our actual favorite?
Whichever stretch of sand is closest when the sky starts turning pink.
Experience Pleasure Island with Vesta
At Vesta Property Group, we think the best beach vacations aren't necessarily made from packed itineraries.
They're morning coffee on the deck. Barefoot walks before breakfast. Finding a favorite local restaurant. Taking the long way back to your rental. And waking up early enough to watch the sun rise over the Atlantic at least once.
Our locally managed vacation rentals in Carolina Beach and Kure Beach give you a comfortable home base for experiencing everything Pleasure Island has to offer.
So set the alarm, grab the coffee, and head toward the ocean.
We promise this one's worth getting out of bed for.
