Carolina Beach sits on Pleasure Island just south of Wilmington and combines wide beaches with a classic beach-town atmosphere, local restaurants, outdoor adventures, live music, and plenty of places where flip-flops are basically the dress code.

It's lively without feeling like a massive resort destination, and one of the best things about staying here is how easy it is to make your vacation exactly what you want it to be.

Spend the entire week on the sand. Explore the island from Carolina Beach to Fort Fisher. Eat your way through town. Or do a little bit of everything.

Here's the Vesta guide to experiencing Carolina Beach for the first time.

First Things First: Hit the Beach

Obviously.

Carolina Beach has public beach accesses throughout town, so getting your toes in the sand is easy no matter where you're staying. Many oceanfront and oceanside vacation rentals also put you within an easy walk of the beach.

Our advice? Don't overcomplicate your first day.

Get checked in, unpack the bare minimum, throw on a swimsuit, and head to the ocean.

There will be plenty of time for itineraries tomorrow.

Vesta Tip: Always check the beach warning flags and current ocean conditions before swimming. Rip currents are a normal part of ocean swimming, and conditions can change throughout the day.

Spend an Evening at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk

Carolina Beach Boardwalk is one of the most recognizable parts of town and a must for first-time visitors.

The Boardwalk District combines ocean views with restaurants, bars, shops, sweet treats, and seasonal entertainment. During summer, the area becomes especially lively with amusement rides, live entertainment, and community events.

Our favorite way to experience it?

Head over after dinner, wander without much of a plan, grab something sweet, and enjoy the fact that you're officially on beach time.

See the Other Side of Carolina Beach

The ocean gets most of the attention, but Carolina Beach has a completely different landscape just a few minutes away.

Carolina Beach State Park is one of the best places to trade your beach chair for a pair of sneakers.

The park features coastal trails, boating and fishing access, wooded areas along the Cape Fear River, and one particularly cool local resident: the Venus flytrap.

Yes, they grow naturally here.

Several trails are approachable for casual hikers, making the park an easy morning activity before the heat of the day sets in.

Vesta Tip: Go early, bring bug spray and water, and keep an eye out for carnivorous plants along the trails. Look — don't pick!

Start at a Local Coffee Shop

Skip the hotel-lobby-coffee experience. You're at the beach.

Carolina Beach and neighboring Kure Beach have several great independent coffee spots worth working into your mornings.

For a coffee stop near the Boardwalk, Crush and Grind is an easy favorite, with coffee in the morning and beer and wine later in the day.

If you're exploring farther south, Happy Hippies Java Hut in Kure Beach is one of our favorite little island stops.

Grab your coffee and take it to the beach. That's the meeting room now.

Eat Somewhere With a View

You're on an island. At least one meal should involve staring at the ocean.

Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar delivers exactly the kind of Carolina Beach experience first-time visitors are usually looking for: casual coastal food, drinks, ocean views, and a tiki bar extending out toward the water.

It's particularly fun when you aren't rushing anywhere afterward.

Eat, grab a drink, listen to the ocean, and stay awhile.

Don't Miss Fort Fisher

Technically, you've left Carolina Beach by this point, but keep driving south.

Seriously.

The farther south you travel on Pleasure Island, the quieter and more natural the landscape becomes. You'll pass through Kure Beach before reaching Fort Fisher at the southern end of the island.

It's one of our favorite areas for a scenic drive, beach day, walk, or sunset.

If your vacation schedule is packed, this is one excursion we'd still make room for.

Explore More Than Just the Ocean

Carolina Beach is surrounded by water, which means there's a lot more to do than sit on the beach.

Depending on your vacation style, try:

Kayaking or paddleboarding
Fishing
Surfing
Boat tours
Fishing charters
Biking the Island Greenway
Hiking at Carolina Beach State Park
Driving onto the beach at Freeman Park with the proper vehicle and access requirements

And if your preferred water sport is simply sitting beside it with a drink, we fully support that too.

Spend a Morning at Carolina Beach Lake

Just a couple of blocks from the ocean, Carolina Beach Lake offers an entirely different change of pace.

The 11-acre lake has a walking path, picnic areas, gazebos and restrooms, making it an easy place for a morning walk or family outing.

During the warmer months, Saturday mornings also bring the Carolina Beach Farmers Market to the lake area, where you can browse local vendors and pick up something to take home.

Make a Stop at The Veggie Wagon

Yes, you can go to a regular grocery store.

But you should also go to The Veggie Wagon.

This locally loved market is one of those places you'll probably visit for one thing and leave carrying six. You'll find produce, specialty groceries, locally made products, prepared foods, treats, coffee, and plenty of things that are perfect for stocking your vacation rental.

It's especially handy when you want an easy dinner at the house without actually cooking an entire dinner.

Experience the Weirdness That Is The Fat Pelican

Some places are difficult to adequately explain.

The Fat Pelican is one of them.

This long-running Carolina Beach dive bar is known for its eclectic decor, sandy outdoor area and walk-in cooler where you choose your own beer.

Is it polished? Absolutely not.

Is that the entire point? Absolutely.

It's quirky, unmistakably Carolina Beach, and worth experiencing at least once if you're looking for a laid-back night out.

A Quick Word About Parking

This is the part nobody wants to discuss until they're circling the Boardwalk for the third time.

Carolina Beach has public lots, street parking and parking near many beach accesses. The Town maintains an official public parking system and map showing municipal lots, street parking and beach-access parking.

During peak summer weeks, popular areas can fill quickly.

Vesta Tip: If you're heading to the Boardwalk or a popular beach access during peak season, go earlier than you think you need to. If you're staying within walking distance, even better — leave the car at your rental.

Parking regulations and rates can change, so always check current Town of Carolina Beach information before your trip.

Don't Let a Rainy Day Ruin the Trip

Coastal weather has a mind of its own.

A forecast showing rain does not necessarily mean your entire beach day is doomed. Summer showers can move through quickly, so avoid canceling the whole day because of one ugly weather-app icon.

If the rain sticks around, explore local shops, grab a long lunch, visit the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, head into Wilmington, or embrace the vacation-rental life with movies, games and takeout.

Sometimes a rainy beach afternoon ends up being one of the best parts of the trip.

Slow Down

This might be our most important first-timer advice.

You don't need to do everything.

Carolina Beach is best when you leave a little room in the schedule for absolutely nothing.

Walk the beach before breakfast.

Take the long way home.

Stop somewhere because it looks interesting.

Have another drink.

Watch the sunset.

Sit on the deck after everyone else has gone inside.

A beach vacation shouldn't require recovering from your vacation.
